The Kentucky Derby
"Run for the Roses"

The Kentucky Derby is our theme for the Run for the Promise Gala, benefiting N.C. Children's Hospital.

The Kentucky Derby is also called the “Run for the Roses,” a reference to the lush blanket of 554 red roses draped over the winner following the race.

The Derby is the first leg in the US Triple Crown run by 3-year-old Thoroughbreds in May and June each year. It is followed by the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. A Thoroughbred must win all three races to win the Triple Crown, a feat which hasn’t been accomplished since 1978.
